Native and Rural

I represent a rural district and take that to heart. I spend weeks at a time literally living out of my backpack, traveling village to village, doing homestays with local families, spending time to learn and help with local issues. I believe in providing full and equal access to government, no matter how small or isolated the community.

  • I passed legislation making Alaska's 20 Native languages official languages with the State of Alaska, joining English. I believe in and take an "all of the above" approach to Native language revitalization. I appreciate the beauty and vibrancy of Alaska's Native culture and support its further vitalization in every possible way.
  • I believe subsistence must be protected at all costs. It should be Alaska's number one priority when it comes to natural resource management.
  • I support rural preference. I support a constitutional amendment that provides rural preference.
  • I believe tribal governments are sovereign governments.
